The singularly great thing about John McCain is his never quit spirit. No matter what else is said about him, he exhibited heroic courage as a POW in Viet Nam. This draws a subtle but powerful contrast to his opponents this year, who seem to think most Americans need them to save their sorry butts from the vagaries of a cruel world through Government largess. There are no frills and flourishes or soaring appeals to abstract concepts from him. But there are plenty of flaws that will be a real challenge for the Republican base to support. The guy is a stubborn old coot from the beltway who thinks and speaks it. Perhaps too many years of Senatorial collegiality have blurred the fact that you don't get anywhere with Democrats on their terms. More significantly it has leeched away an unhealthy amount of whatever conservatism he derived from Ronald Reagan. Gaining enough support to win this yearwill likely require him to sign every pledge to conservatives in his own blood, because none of them believe he'll keep them otherwise.
